Contexel vs Mem0.
Both are called AI memory. They solve different problems: Mem0 is for developers building an AI product, Contexel is for people using the AI apps they already have.
The short answerPick Mem0 if you are building your own AI app or agent and want to add memory to it with an SDK and an API. Pick Contexel if you want ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and the other AI apps you already use to share one memory across your team, with no code.
At a glance
| Mem0 | Contexel | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Developers adding memory to an AI app or agent they build | People and teams using ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and similar apps |
| How you use it | An SDK and an API in your code, plus an MCP server | Connect your AI apps, then talk to them as usual |
| Who the memory is about | Your app's end users, one memory per user or agent | Your team, clients or family, split into workspaces you share |
| Checking an answer | Your app decides what to show | Each memory keeps its source, and the console shows each memory and its history |
| Setup | Code and an API key | Add a connector, a few minutes |
What Mem0 does well
Mem0 is a memory layer for developers. If you're building a support bot or an agent, Mem0 extracts facts from each conversation, stores them per user, and hands the relevant ones back to your model on the next turn. It has SDKs, a hosted platform and an open-source version, and for that job it is a strong choice.
Why it's a different job
Mem0 assumes you control the AI app and write code around it. Most teams don't build their AI; they use ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor. What they need is for those apps to share what the team decided, for each person to see only the workspaces they belong to, and for a human to be able to check and correct what the AI remembers.
That is what Contexel is for. Nothing to build: you connect each app, and "remember this for the team" in one app is there when a teammate asks in another.
Which should you use?
Mem0 if you are shipping your own AI product and want memory for your users inside it.
Contexel if you want the AI apps your team already uses to share one memory you can check. Some teams use both: Mem0 inside the product they build, Contexel for the team building it.
Questions
Can developers use Contexel too?
Yes. Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and Gemini CLI all connect to Contexel, so conventions and decisions follow a developer across repositories and apps. It isn't an SDK for adding memory to an app you build.
Does Contexel read my code or my chats?
No. Contexel only stores what you or your AI choose to save as a memory. It does not read your repository or your chat history.
Who can see what I save?
You, and the people you share with. In a team or family account, anyone who manages the account can also open your private workspace, and you are told. Contexel holds the encryption key, so it could read it too.
