AI memory for teams

What is an MCP memory server?

The plain-English version: what MCP is, what a memory server does, and the questions to ask before you pick one.

The short answerMCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI apps such as ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and Claude Code connect to outside services. An MCP memory server is one of those services: it gives the AI tools to save a memory and to look memories up. Because every app speaks the same standard, one memory server can serve all of your AI apps at once.

How it works

You add the server's address to your AI app, usually under Connectors or an MCP settings file. The app then sees a few new tools, such as "save a memory" and "look something up". When you say "remember this", the AI calls the save tool. When a question needs something you saved, it calls the lookup tool and uses what comes back.

Three kinds

  • Local, on your computer.Private and free, but only the apps on that one machine can use it, and it's yours alone.
  • Developer memory APIs.Built for adding memory to an AI product you're building, with SDKs and per-user memory. Mem0 is one of the best known; see how it compares.
  • Hosted, shared memory. One address that works from any app on any device, shared with the people you choose. Contexel is this kind.

Questions to ask before you pick one

  • Which apps does it work with?Web apps like ChatGPT and Claude need a hosted address with sign-in; a local server usually only reaches desktop and terminal tools.
  • Can you share it?With your team, a client, your family, and only the parts you choose?
  • Can you check an answer?Does the AI get told where each memory came from, so you can verify it and fix it?
  • How much does each lookup send?A server that returns only what's relevant sends less text (and costs less) than one that hands back everything.
  • Can you leave? Can you export every memory as plain files?
  • How is it protected? Is your data encrypted at rest, and who can access it?

How Contexel answers them

  • Which apps.ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and any app that supports MCP, through one address: https://contexel.ai/mcp.
  • Sharing. You share workspaces with the people you choose.
  • Checking. Each memory keeps its source.
  • What a lookup sends.Only what's relevant to the question.
  • Leaving. You can download every memory as plain text files.
  • Protection.Your data is stored encrypted. Contexel holds the key so search can work, which means Contexel could technically read your data. See Security for details.

The documentation covers each tool and what it can change.

Questions

Do I need to install anything?

Not for a hosted memory server. You paste its address into your AI app's connector settings and sign in with your browser.

Is MCP only for developers?

No. ChatGPT and Claude on the web both support MCP connectors, so anyone can add one from the app's settings.

Does the AI always use the memory server?

Not always. A short line in the app's instructions makes it more reliable. Our guide on whether AI uses its memory has the numbers.
