Contexel vs ChatGPT memory.
ChatGPT's memory is built for one person in one app. Contexel is built for what a team, or a household, needs every AI to know.
The short answerUse ChatGPT's own memory for personal preferences inside ChatGPT. Use Contexel when the same facts need to reach other people, or other AI apps such as Claude and Cursor. They work side by side: connecting Contexel doesn't turn ChatGPT's memory off.
At a glance
| ChatGPT memory | Contexel | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it's for | You, in your own ChatGPT account | You, your team, your clients or your family |
| Which apps can use it | ChatGPT | ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and any other AI app that can add a connector |
| Shared with others | Not with other people, except in a shared Project on a business plan | Any workspace you share, with the people you invite, in whichever app each person uses |
| Checking what it knows | You can view and delete your own saved memories in Settings | Each memory keeps who saved it and where it came from, and you can check it in Contexel |
| Take it with you | Stays in ChatGPT | Download every memory as plain text files, any time |
| Setup | Built in | Add a connector, a few minutes |
What ChatGPT's memory does well
ChatGPT remembers details about you across your chats: your job, your writing style, the fact that you're vegetarian. It's built in, it needs no setup, and you can see and delete what it saved in Settings. For one person who only uses ChatGPT, that is often all the memory you need.
Where it stops
The limits show up the moment a second person or a second app is involved.
- It stays in ChatGPT.A teammate who uses Claude or Cursor never sees what ChatGPT learned, and neither do you when you switch apps.
- It belongs to one account.Outside a shared Project, what you told ChatGPT about how your team works stays with you.
- Only you can check it.You can review your own saved memories, but there is no shared record a team can check and correct together.
What Contexel adds
Contexel is one memory that every AI app you connect can read and add to. Tell ChatGPT "remember for the team: invoices go out on the 1st", and a teammate asking Claude a week later gets that answer from the team's memory.
Each person starts with a private workspace. Shared workspaces are for the things a group should all know, and you choose who is in each one. ChatGPT keeps its own memory for you; Contexel adds the shared one beside it.
Which should you use?
Just ChatGPT's memory if you work alone, use only ChatGPT, and mostly want it to remember your preferences.
A shared ChatGPT Project if your whole team is on a ChatGPT business plan, uses only ChatGPT, and the shared knowledge belongs to one piece of work.
Contexel if people use different AI apps, if you use more than one yourself, or if you want to check where each remembered fact came from. Connecting ChatGPT takes a few minutes.
Questions
Can I move what ChatGPT already remembers into Contexel?
Yes. The console gives you a request to send in ChatGPT that lists what it remembers about you. Paste the answer back, uncheck anything you don't want kept, and save the rest.
Who can see what I save?
You, and the people you share with. In a team or family account, anyone who manages the account can also open your private workspace, and you are told. Contexel holds the encryption key, so it could read it too.
