AI memory for teams

Why your AI forgets what you told it.

You explained it last week. Today it's gone. Here's why that happens, and what actually fixes it.

The short answerAn AI model only sees what's in the current conversation. Anything from earlier has to be saved somewhere and brought back in, and the built-in memory in ChatGPT and Claude only keeps some things, only for you, and only in that app. To make something stick, save it on purpose to a memory the AI checks, and say "remember this".

The model starts fresh every time

A language model has no memory of its own between conversations. Each time you start a chat, it sees only the words in that chat, plus whatever the app adds behind the scenes. "Memory" features work by saving notes and adding the relevant ones to your next chat.

Four reasons it forgot

  • It never saved it.Built-in memory picks what seems worth keeping. A detail you mentioned in passing often isn't.
  • You're in a different place.Memory in a ChatGPT or Claude Project stays in that Project, and a new chat outside it won't see it.
  • You're in a different app.ChatGPT's memory doesn't reach Claude, and neither reaches Cursor or your terminal.
  • Someone else told it.Your teammate explained it to their AI, not yours. Personal memory is personal.

How to make it stick

Say "remember" when it matters, so the app saves it on purpose. Check what it saved: both ChatGPT and Claude let you see and edit their memory in Settings.

If the problem is a second app or a second person, you need a memory outside any one app. Contexel connects to ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and other AI apps as one shared memory, and each memory keeps who saved it and when, so you can check whether your AI really remembered or guessed. Connecting takes a few minutes: start with Claude or ChatGPT.

Questions

Why does ChatGPT remember some things and not others?

ChatGPT decides what to save unless you ask it to remember something. You can see and delete what it saved in its Settings.

Is a longer chat the same as memory?

No. A long chat keeps everything in view for a while, but a new chat starts empty, and very long chats push early messages out.

Can my AI remember things for my whole team?

Yes, with a shared memory. Contexel lets a team save to one shared workspace that every member's AI can read, whichever app they use.
